dc.description.abstract | In this study, the rats were made diabetic with a single intravenous or intraperitoneal injection of STZ (65 mg/kg) and subsequently were given vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4) in drinking water for six-weeks at three different concentrations (0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 mg/kg VOSO4) and the effects of these concentrations on blood parameters were investigated. In both diabetic groups VOSO4 - treatments improved glycemic control and prevented hyperphagia, and polydipsia but no significant body weight gain was evident. Additionally, VOSO4 treatment enhanced plasma insulin levels as well as producing dose-dependent decreases in aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, urea, creatinine, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is important to note than 1.5 mg/VOSO4 concentration has provided a more effective treatment. VOSO4-treatment shows an antidiabetic effect in both diabetic groups; however, this antidiabetic effect varies depending on the dose admintered on and the severity of diabetes. | en_US |
